The Bible, this Sunday Evening

This Sunday begins the retelling of some of the more famous Bible Stories you have heard on the small screen.  The History Channel (which can tend to be very liberal in many accounts) is airing what might be one of the better Cinematic Events shown.  There are some "liberties" made in the story, ie Wise men at the Birth of Jesus, but it still will provide a very visual look at much of the Gospel. See the link below and read Focus on the Family's review of the mini series.

The highly anticipated five-week miniseries, The Bible, debuts this coming Sunday, March 3, on the History Channel.

Produced by Mark Burnett (Survivor, The Voice) and his wife Roma Downey (Touched by an Angel) the ten-hour presentation is a dramatic and ambitious project. It's also a labor of love for the Burnetts, who began this endeavor with a noble and classically evangelistic goal: to encourage people to read the Bible.

Let's face it - it takes some moxie to lift up the Bible in the middle of Hollywood. In fact, when they first proposed the project they were told to try and tell the story without mentioning Jesus. They refused, rightly countering, of course, that not only is it impossible to omit Jesus, but that the life, death and resurrection of Jesus is the climax of the entire book!

I've had the pleasure of getting to know Mark and Roma over the last six months. In the process we've become friends. It's always inspiring to be around people who have a fervent desire to tell other people about Jesus. And this couple is clearly passionate about sharing the message of Jesus with the world as well as having the opportunity to put on film the greatest story ever told, come what may from those who may object to it.

"It's our story," said Roma Downey.  "We can identify and relate with the characters, because their situations might be 2,000 years ago, but the things that they're feeling and experiencing, the dynamics that are going on within their families, it's the same issues that we have today. Human nature hasn't changed that much. The mistakes that the characters are making back then, we're still making those mistakes today."

Because it's impossible to tell the entire story of the Bible in just ten hours, you might notice that some creative license has been taken from time to time. For example, we know the Magi didn't visit Jesus until he was approximately two-years-old, but in the miniseries you'll see them honoring the infant Jesus upon his birth. In short, though, you should know the series never deviates from prevailing themes.

I want to share a clip with you, but on the eve of this television debut, may I ask you a favor, please?

I believe the Bible is the inspired, inerrant Word of God. I believe we should treat the Scriptures with the utmost degree of care and respect. I also know that some people object to any artistic rendering of Jesus because of the limited nature of art and the fact that Jesus has no limits.

But I also believe that we're living in a dark day when millions of people, including our neighbors and even many of our family and friends, refuse to accept Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior. Many of these same people refuse to go to church. They refuse to open a Bible. But many of these people watch television. That The Bible may serve as a spark to rekindle or kindle their faith should be a source of great excitement for all of us.

I hope people don't lose sight of the big picture, that this series is designed to turn people to Jesus and to encourage them to dig deeper into their Bibles.

Culture, Doctrine, Beliefs, Gods Word......

We are leaving the book for minor prophets for awhile.  We trust you have found the lesson both educational and spiritually challenging.  We are now moving into the New Testament and 1 Timothy is were we will begin.  Sound Doctrine is the first topical study beginning this Sunday.  But before we know what Sound Doctrine his we must understand what Doctrine is and what God's word teaches us it is.  From that we can determine soundness.

Our culture tells us that all beliefs are equally valid. Culture states that there is no way to discern if one belief has more authority than another belief, even if they conflict. Rather than call anything truth, we are led to refer to truth as our personal beliefs or belief system.

Is our culture correct? Are all beliefs equal, subjective and to be respected? Not according to Jesus Christ in John 14:6 where he stated, "I am the way, and the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me." When Jesus said he was "the way," he made it clear that all beliefs are not equal. When he said he was "the truth," he made it clear that there is truth greater than your opinion or experience. When he stated that he was "the life," he was stating clearly that all other beliefs are irrelevant.

Thus, the proper question is not "what" is truth but rather "who" is truth? Truth is not a personal belief system. Truth is a person. Truth is found in the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus is truth.

Jesus is the way. Jesus is life.

Take time to study God's word this week.  Don't just read it.  Ask yourself questions about what you are reading.  Who are the characters, who wrote it, who are they speaking to at the time, what is the culture of the time, what is the CONTEXT.  We hope to see you all there Sunday morning.  God Bless....

1 Timothy 1:3-17 (New American Standard Bible)

As I urged you upon my departure for Macedonia, remain on at Ephesus so that you may instruct certain men not to teach strange doctrines, nor to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which give rise to mere speculation rather than furthering the administration of God which is by faith. But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. For some men, straying from these things, have turned aside to fruitless discussion, wanting to be teachers of the Law, even though they do not understand either what they are saying or the matters about which they make confident assertions.

But we know that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully, realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers 10 and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching, 11 according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted.

12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because He considered me faithful, putting me into service, 13 even though I was formerly a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent aggressor. Yet I was shown mercy because I acted ignorantly in unbelief; 14 and the grace of our Lord was more than abundant, with the faith and love which are found in Christ Jesus. 15 It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost of all. 16 Yet for this reason I found mercy, so that in me as the foremost, Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience as an example for those who would believe in Him for eternal life. 17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

I have been burdened for years now that The Emergent Church is the very real danger of leading us down a very eternal dangerous path.  The Emergent Church has roots in the very same things the religious people of Israel were guilty of in ancient times.  The lessons of Hosea and Amos recently are no different than what we as the "church" are seeing happen to us across this country.  Watch this trailer of a Christian Documentary about the Roots of the Emergent Church.  Pray for God to open all our eyes and be steadfast in the preaching AND teaching of the Real Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Grace volunteers getting it done in Adairsville

Thanks Gary Turner for the pic and sweating in the cold today.

Friday, February 1, 2013

PLans for Tomorrow to help Adairsville - from Bartow Baptist Assoc.

We are asking volunteers across our region to meet at 8:00 AM on Saturday, February 2nd at Adairsville Church of God located at 297 Old Dixie Hwy in Adairsville.  This is above Adairsville right off of Hwy 41. If you go north on 41 from Adairsville you cannot miss the church, it is on the left.

We will be clearing debris and removing trees. This means we will have chainsaw work.  If you have equipment or a good strong back to help remove debris, you are needed.  Bring good gloves, write your name on the equipment you bring with a phone number.  Wear warm clothing as it will be chilly tomorrow.  Everyone will get their assignments at the meeting.

Thank you all for your help in this matter.
